Shri Satyanarayana Puja is performed to seek the blessings of Lord Narayan, a form of Lord Vishnu who embodies truth.
While this puja can be conducted on any day, performing it on a full moon (Purnima or Pournami) is considered especially auspicious.
Devotees observing the puja should fast on the day of the ritual, which can be performed in the morning or evening. However, evening is traditionally preferred as devotees can break their fast with prasadam at that time.
www.hinduheritageservices.com provides Satyanarayana Puja dates for evening observance, meaning some dates may fall on Chaturdashi, the day before Purnima.
Devotees who prefer morning puja should consult Hindu Heritage Services to ensure the ritual aligns with Purnima tithi, as the tithi might end in the morning, making it less suitable for morning observance.
The ritual includes worship of Lord Satyanarayana, a compassionate form of Lord Vishnu. The deity, often represented by the sacred Saligram stone, is cleansed with panchamritam (a mixture of milk, honey, ghee, yogurt, and sugar).
Panjiri (a sweet mixture of roasted wheat flour) along with fruits, including bananas, and tulasi leaves are offered as prasad to make it holy.
An essential part of the puja is listening to the Satyanarayana Katha, the story of the puja. This Katha explains the origins, benefits, and consequences of the puja for those participating and fasting.
The ceremony concludes with an aarti, in which a small camphor-lit flame is rotated in front of the deity. Devotees then partake of the panchamritam and prasadam, with those fasting consuming them after breaking the fast.
All the tithi calculations on this site are based on vrat (fasting) days. For tithi calculations specific to Shraddha (ancestral rituals), please reach out to us.
