Ekadashi Vratham - 2025

Significance of Ekadashi Vratham
Ekadashi fasting is observed on the 11th day of each lunar fortnight in the Hindu calendar.
There are two Ekadashi fasting days each month: one during the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase of the moon) and the other during the Krishna Paksha (waning phase).
Devotees of Lord Vishnu observe Ekadashi fasting to earn His blessings. The Ekadashi fast typically lasts for three days. The day before the fast, devotees consume a single meal in the afternoon to ensure their stomach is clear for the fasting day.

On the Ekadashi day itself, they observe a strict fast, breaking it only after sunrise the following day. During Ekadashi, eating grains and cereals is strictly prohibited.
Devotees may choose the type of fast according to their physical capacity. Some may opt for a complete fast without water, while others may drink water, eat only fruits, or take a single meal.
The type of fast should be decided before beginning the fast.
In certain cases, Ekadashi fasting is observed on two consecutive days. For the Smartha tradition, it is recommended to observe the fast on the first day only.
The second Ekadashi fast, known as the alternate Ekadashi, is specifically suggested for Sannyasis, widows, and those seeking Moksha. For Smarthas, this second fast coincides with the Vaishnava Ekadashi.
Devotees who seek the love and blessings of Lord Vishnu may observe the fast on both days, known as a dual Ekadashi fast.
This page lists the Ekadashi fasting dates for Smarthas. Vaishnavas should consult us to identify their fasting days, which may differ by one day from the Smartha fasting days.
